The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
