Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police issued surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
