New Year Revelers Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Forecast Throughout the UK
Weather experts have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Proceed Despite Forecasts
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the Met Office.
Fireworks Under Clear but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are expected to be chilly, making additional clothing a necessity, as per forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for Friday
Heading into Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Readings Expected to Fall Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Public Health Alerts Activated
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this indicated the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This includes a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
