Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
