During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
